How to Keep Your Mental Health Up at the Workplace

One topic of discussion as of lately is mental health in the workplace. The 9-5 life is sometimes even longer, and it can be a challenge to balance work and life. You are told by society that this is a part of life, and you just need to suck it up and do a good job.

But for many, their mental health needs to be discussed and improved if a person does want to do well in their job. Here are some good ways to keep your mental health up at the workplace when it feels like you’re mentally at your low. 

Get help if you need it!

If you’re suffering from extreme depression, anxiety, or another mental health problem, there is no shame in talking to a therapist or a counselor for help. As of lately, many work schedules that are so out of whack that it takes forever to find the time to get the therapy you need. Thankfully, online therapy or counseling is here to help.

Make sure you’re getting enough rest

Our current society is so sleepless. You may have the “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” attitude, especially if your job is so sporadic and requires you to be up at odd hours. It’s important that you get enough sleep if you want to keep your mental health up. 

This sounds a bit obvious; you can’t live off energy drinks alone. But for many, it’s so hard to get sleep,  sleeping pills. If you’re one of those people who has a sleepless night, try figuring out why that is. Sometimes, it may be something wrong with your sleep hygiene. If you go to bed a little bit too wound up, it can have some tough consequences. 

Make sure your sleep hygiene is good. Always do something relaxing an hour or so before bed. If you still have trouble falling asleep or your mind is racing, you may benefit from meditation, or for seeing a counselor. 

While one night of poor sleep isn’t going to kill you, too many bad nights of rest is not a good move. You may be more irritable, and have worsening mental health problems. 

Please, balance work and life

The inability to balance work and life can be one of the biggest challenges for most people, and as such, it can be the main source of mental stress and degradation. Maintaining the balance, though, can vastly improve your mental health.

Some people have the workaholic mindset. They are always taking on extra work and going above and beyond to get their job done. That is a good mindset to have, to a degree. You also need to balance your work life with your family life. If you have hobbies, make some time to get them done. Have a night with your friends. Don’t slack, but also don’t devote so much time to your work that you lose your sanity

Make sure the workplace is free from toxic people

Sometimes, the reason why your mental health is suffering at work is because there is that one person who is making you miserable. Maybe it’s an annoying coworker, or a manager who is always breathing down your neck. 

At work, you’re going to be with people you may not consider friends, but it’s important you all get along. If there is a toxic person, try avoiding them if possible, or tell them what they’re doing is wrong.

If that toxic person is deciding the fate of your job, you may need to be a bit more careful with your words, but you may also wonder if the job is worth your sanity. 

Have ambitions and work on them 

One trap you should never fall into is losing your ambitions. When you have ambitions, it can be much easier for you to keep your mental health up. Maybe you have a dream job or business you want to work on. If so, that’s a good thing.

By having some ambitions, you’re guaranteeing that you’re always looking forward. Doing the same thing every day is not good for your mental health. 

Get proper exercise 

Exercise has been proven to improve mental health by lessening anxiety and depression.

Another way you can keep your mental health up is by eating right and exercising. Exercise helps release feel-good chemicals in your mind and allows you to burn any emotions you have such as anger. 

If you’re always busy with work, it can be a little hard to get the workouts you need. Try doing some jumping jacks or another small workout on your break hours. If you have a gym nearby, try spending an hour at that.

Normalize mental health at your workplace 

Finally, you are not going to improve your mental health at the workplace unless you improve the mental health of everyone else. If you’re curious about how you can do that, here are a few ideas:

  • Reach out to a coworker and see how they are feeling. 
  • Talk to your boss and propose a mental health day at your workplace. 
  • Always encourage people to take time for themselves. 
  • Remind everyone there is no shame in seeking help if one needs it.
